Basic mailing information:
Advantages:
- Quick Delivery: First Class mail, in-state, is generally delivered in 1 to 2 days, and usually takes less than a week to reach anywhere in the continental U.S.
- Returned Mail: Bad addresses and moves that are 12 to 18 months old come back to the sender at no charge. Moves within 12 months automatically get forwarded (or could be directed by the use of postal endorsements) to come back to the sender. In either case, there is no charge.
- More reliable : Postal employees are instructed to make every effort to deliver first class mail. This means they will try to make sense of bad handwriting or a badly formed address.
- Quality Feel: Most of your important mail comes via First Class. This has conditioned people to expect something important in First Class and can lead to higher rates of opened mail.
Disadvantages:
- Cost: First Class mail costs more than some of the other mailing options. Those extra First Class services are not free.
- Weight / Cost: The cost of first class mail rises incrementally with every ounce.
- Weight Restriction: First Class mail cannot exceed 13 ounces.
Advantages:
- Weight/Cost: Priority Mail is very competitve for heavy (up to 70lbs) mail pieces.
- Speed: Generally 2 or 3 day ship time.
- Delivery Confirmation is free for many shippers.
- Packaging Supplies Inlcuded: The USPS will ship you boxes and mailers of many sizes for FREE. This can save hundreds or thousands of dollars over the course of a years shipping.
- Flat Rate Shipping: With the free Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes you can ship any weight as long as it fits in the box for a nominal fee. Currently, the standard rate is $8.95.
Disadvantages:
- Weight goes up by the pound: Priority Mail costs increase by the pound - not ounce. Do you have a 1 pound 1 ounce package? You will pay for the full 2 pounds.
- Order Tracking : The delivery confirmation rarely works until the package has already been delivered. For those people who are used to the UPS or FedEx tracking system you will be disappointed.
| Standard Mail (Bulk Rate) |
Advantages:
- Low Cost: The Post Office gives standard mail users a low postage rate.
- Up to 3.3 ounces: You pay the same rate up to 3.3 ounces. Beyond 3.3 ounces it incrementally increases to a maximum of 16 ounces.
- Incremental postage increase: After 3.3 ounces, postage goes up incrementally as the weight goes up.
Disadvantages:
- Slow Delivery: Standard mail generally takes 4 to 8 business days, in-state. You can expect to wait 10 days up to 3 weeks for mail going across the country.
- Return mail is not free: Any bad addresses that are more than 12 months old are either not returned or you have to pay a fee.
- Weight Restriction: Weight of a single piece cannot exceed 1 pound.
- Qualification: Standard mail must be either 200 pieces or have a combined weight of 50 pounds. They must also be the same size.
